Description
signed Steuben CALYPSO VASE designed by Marco Zanini Make a SERIOUS or not so serious statement with this massive yet playfull signed Steuben Calypso Vase. A very rare design by Marco Zanini a protege of Ettore Sottsass and a founding member of the Memphis Design Group. Mr. Zanini was commissioned by Steuben to design several pieces which were made in limited quantities for a limited time in the late 1980's. The Memphis Group....consisting of several noted designers and architects (including Michael Graves) met several times in the 1980's and were noted for their shocking styles, a reaction to the austerity of modernism (Later several members worked for the Knoll Group). This gorgeous Steuben vase is in superb unused condition with a mirror finish all around and having no chips, no cracks, no dings, no scuffs, no water lines/stains, no scratches on the body. It appears to have only been displayed. This is one of Steuben's largest vases over 12.5" tall with a top diameter of approx 7". The glass is quite thick and curvaceous like Calypso, the Goddess/sea nymph who tempted and delayed Odysseus on his return to Ithaca. The winner/collector will be thrilled with this special work of glass art. I have set a very fair starting bid for a rare Steuben design with great detail that is in superb condition + no hidden reserve. The pictures do not do this piece justice or convey it's size/heft. Currently very large Steuben vases are in the $2000 and up price range. Steuben Glass was founded by Frederick Carder in 1903. It is the worlds foremost artisan glass house. Steuben glass continues to be hand made by American craftsmen at the works in Corning NY. Because it is hand made, each piece is unique. Steuben glass is frequently the United States’ gift of State to foreign dignitaries. Steuben markets no “seconds”. Items that do not meet their exacting production standards are destroyed by being smashed in a bin. Steuben is a luxury brand and they have no "sales". Please e-mail me if you have any questions and thank you your interest in this beautiful vase. I have a reputation for selling art glass of the highest quality, 99% of my feedback is based on sales of Steuben Glass. Please read the feedback from my satisfied buyers and bid with confidence. I pay Ebay extra so that you can enlarge the photos. Please do so and take a closer look. Also, please check out my other Steuben items on Ebay. This item will be double boxed/packed with care and shipped insured priority mail. The shipping charge reflects the oversize outer box and weight of this vase. Thank you again for your interest in this terrific Calypso Vase (which is Steuben item #8758, and appears on page 328 of the MJ Madigan Steuben reference book 2003 edition.)
