Description
Important Turner jug, cockfighting, lid, 1800, NR (view larger picture) A friend of ours collected rare early British pottery until about 20 years ago, when it became too hard for him to locate fine pieces in fine condition. Now he is retired and clearing his collection. We convinced him to try eBay to see if it can support really high end sales in this field. If you like this material, please check our listings in future months for many more examples. Here we are pleased to offer an important jug with lid that dates from about 1800. This piece is marked TURNER and is by John Turner of Lane End. The body is a very hard stoneware which Turner was able to model with great skill and flexibility. (For information about John Turner of Lane End, check GOOGLE for numerous other sources. The best reference book is by Bevis Hillier, Master Potters of the Industrial Revolution The Turners of Lane End, published in London in 1965 by Cory, Adams & MacKay.) This jug still has it original lid, which is highly unusual, and both jug and lid are in immeculate condition. The decoration is highly characteristic, above an engine-turned base. The main subject is a cockfighting scene with 8 men watching intently. (They could have stepped directly out of an engraving by William Hogarth.) The details are remarkable--such as, for example, the strap added across the handle where it attaches to the body of the jug. Note also the wonderful double cyma curve inside the spout. This jug relates to another example in the Brighton & Hove Museums (online at The Royal Pavilion, Libraries & Museums Collections) but their example is not as good as this one we offer. It lacks the lid, the cockfighting applique is discolored and damage, and since it is merely "attributed to" Turner, we assume it is no marked. This jug measures about 2 1/4 inches across the base and 5 1/2 inches to the level of the tip of the spout. The lid and its finial add another 1 1/4 inches to the total height. A rare and important work of the potter's art. Will be shipped only with insurance and special handling.
