Description
CERAMIC LIDDED POT by Harrison McIntosh A wheel-thrown urn shaped lidded pot crafted out of red-brown earthenware. The pot’s slightly domed lid sits recessed on a flange circling the inside of the mouth. A cup shaped knob rises from the lid on a short neck. Peacock-blue matte glaze was brush-applied horizontally around the pot’s exterior and knob over a light-gray base showing color gradations. The blue was applied slightly heavier on the base of the pot around the perimeter of the low foot. Light-gray free-hand linear sgraffito circles in various sizes with their perimeters touching decorate the pot’s exterior. Each circle has a central “blob” of black engobe. The knob is decorated with light-gray free-hand linear sgraffito circles with center perforations. The rim of the pot’s slightly flared mouth and the knob’s rim are both accented with black engobe. Black engobe was also brushed over the lid’s top. The pot’s interior is coated with light-gray matte glaze. The pot is covered overall with a clear matte glaze. Scattered firing inclusions and speckling is evident over the pot’s surface. The mouth flange, lid underside and low foot remain a burnished bisque finish. The lidded pot measures approximately 10-1/2” high X 7-5/8” at its widest part. The pot is 7-7/8” high without its lid. The artist’s stamp is incised on the bottom. The pot is in mint condition. The piece was created in 1979 by Harrison McIntosh a prominent artist whose works are in the permanent collections of various museums around the world including the Musee National De La Ceramique, France; Musee Des Arts Decoratifs the Louvre, France; Mingei Museum, Japan; Kiushu Museum, Japan; Belgian Royal Collection (ms), Belgium; Arizona State Museum, Arizona; Everson Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Arts and Design, New York; Smithsonian Institution Renwick Gallery, D.C.; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California; Haggin Museum, California; Long Beach Museum of Art, California; Detroit Institute of Arts, Michigan; Johnson Collection, Wisconsin; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Mass.; Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Utah; Boise Arts Museum, Idaho; Newark Museum, New Jersey and others.
