Description
ANTIQUE GUSTAVE DE BRUYN MAJOLICA Fives-Lille VASE PR FRENCH You are bidding on a very large and rare matching pair of majolica vases by the famous French potters Gustave De Bruyn at Fives-Lille in northern France. Circa 1890s. Feature applied flowers and leafs in high relief, hand-painted with realistic colors on a green background. Each measure about 17" H x 10" from handle to handle. They have very minor crazing that consistence with the age, other than that they are in very good condition without damage. Both pieces are marked on the underneath with impressed number 4429 and Gustave de Bruyn's impressed marks. Gustave De Bruyn: Born in Belgium. In 1887 he started his pottery business in Fives, near Lille, in the North of France. In 1889 De Bruyn was awarded a medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the pottery employed about 150 workers and covers about 1.4 hectare, it has up to 400 at the dawn of the First World War. But in 1917, a fire destroyed the plant, and greatly disrupts production. The highest quality Majolica pieces by Gustave De Bruyn was produced between 1887 to 1917.
