Description
MINT CONDITION! ORIGINAL EARLY 1900's "OLD SLEEPY EYE" Western Stoneware Company, Monmouth, Illinois, Cobalt and White Indian Chief and Teepee 5 1/4" ONE-PINT PITCHER No.2, MARKED ON THE BOTTOM with the Monmouth, Ill. Diamond Stamp! This 16 ounce stoneware pitcher has no chips, cracks, hairlines, or even crazing! There is no discoloration at all and it looks like it has never been used! The cobalt blue is vivid and the white is dazzling. The handle is applied, as it should be on these early pitchers, and there are stilt marks on the bottom. I have not cleaned this pitcher so it still has its original patina.  If you wanted to clean it, it would sparkle even brighter. It was obviously stored very well. It is clearly stamped on the bottom with the "WSCo Monmouth Ill" in a diamond. This is the mark that the Weir Pottery Company used after they merged with Western Stoneware Company in 1906.  It also has an impressed "36" and small underlined "5" on the bottom. These were sometimes found as free premiums in sacks of "Sleep-Eye" Flour made at the "Sleepy-Eye" Mill in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota around 1910. The mill closed in 1921. The pitchers were only made until 1937. "Old Sleepy Eye" was a Chief of the Lower Sisseton Sioux in Minnesota between 1822 and 1825. He lived most of his life around the lake that was subsequently named after him in Brown County. He is buried in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. His real name was Ishatumba, which means "eyelids drooping". In 1924, he met with President Monroe, who gave him the name "Chief Old Sleepy Eye". In addition to the pottery by Western Stoneware, there are other items that bear his likeness and are collectible today. Also, reproductions abound. This AUTHENTIC MARKED "OLD SLEEPY EYE" #2 1-PINT PITCHER in MINT CONDITION is a Rare Find! It is offered at NO RESERVE and *FREE SHIPPING with INSURANCE INCLUDED! *Lower US 48 Only.
